Schools

The West Babylon School District serves most of West Babylon and parts of Babylon and Wyandanch. Main School, when it was built, was the only school for the town serving grades K-10 (older students were sent to Babylon High School). The famed poet and writer Walt Whitman was a temporary teacher. By the mid-1950s, the building had been expanded, and became an elementary school. It was demolished in June 1982. Robert Moses, participated in the cornerstone laying ceremony of Santapogue Elementary School, in the fall of 1951. The school opened in September 1952, relieving the overcrowded situation at Main School.

West Babylon School District currently has:

Forest Avenue Elementary
John F. Kennedy Elementary
Santapogue Elementary
South Bay Elementary (Fire destroys 2 of 3 wings on 2/18-2/19/2010)
Tooker Avenue Elementary
West Babylon Junior High
West Babylon Senior High

2010 South Bay Elementary School Fire

On the evening of February 18, around 10pm, a fire started in the boiler room of the school, quickly spreading throughout the entire school after reaching the kitchen and compromising the natural gas lines. Just past midnight, the building was fully engulfed in flames. The blaze was fought for over 7 hours by firefighters from the West Babylon Fire Department, who were quickly joined by volunteers from Babylon, Copiague, East Farmingdale, North Babylon, Lindenhurst and North Lindenhurst. The school is said to have been completely unoccupied at the time of the fire, as the entire school district is on winter break for the week. Before the fire was even out, School officials were working out a plan for over 300 students and their teachers to resume classes as soon as possible. On September 7, 2011 South Bay Elementary School re-opened it's doors.
